How Website Speed, Local SEO, and Conversion Work Together

A case study on how improving site speed, local SEO, and conversion paths increased enquiries for a service business.

How Website Speed, Local SEO, and Conversion Work Together

The Starting Point

A roofing business had a slow, outdated website. It ranked for some local keywords but lost customers at two points:

  1. Search results: The page title was weak, and visitors clicked competitors instead.
  2. On the website: Pages took 3+ seconds to load, and the contact path was confusing.

They wanted more local enquiries. Three changes fixed it.

Change 1: Improve Local SEO Fundamentals

What was wrong:

  • Page title: "Red Oak Roofing — Website" (generic, no location or service).
  • No local schema markup (Google didn't know the business location).
  • Google Business Profile was incomplete (no photos, no business hours).

What changed:

  • New page title: "Roofing in Lanarkshire | Red Oak Roofing | Emergency Repairs Available"
  • Added local schema (Organisation and LocalBusiness) to the footer.
  • Completed Google Business Profile with 20 photos of completed roofing work and team members.
  • Added a specific service area page: "/services/roofing-in-lanarkshire" with local details.

Outcome after 8 weeks: Ranking improved for "roofing Lanarkshire" from position 12 to position 4. Search clicks increased ~35%.

Change 2: Speed Up the Website

What was wrong:

  • Homepage loaded in 3.2 seconds (goal: under 2.5 seconds).
  • Images weren't optimised (1.2 MB photos for thumbnails).
  • JavaScript on the contact form was blocking page render.

What changed:

  • Compressed and resized all images (lost no quality, saved 600 KB).
  • Deferred non-critical JavaScript.
  • Switched to a faster hosting plan.
  • Enabled caching in the browser.

Outcome: Homage now loads in 1.8 seconds. Google PageSpeed Insights score improved from 45 to 78.

Why it matters: A 1-second improvement in page speed increased engagement time by ~20% and reduced bounce rate from 52% to 38%. Faster sites also rank higher for local keywords.

Change 3: Simplify the Conversion Path

What was wrong:

  • Contact form asked for 12 fields (including "roof material" and "preferred time of year").
  • No phone number on the main page.
  • The call-to-action button was in the footer, not visible above the fold.

What changed:

  • Replaced the 12-field form with a 3-field form: name, phone, brief message.
  • Added a large "Call us" button in the header (phone number visible from page load).
  • Moved the contact form above the fold.
  • Added a "Get a free quote" CTA on service pages linking to the form.

Outcome: Form submissions increased from ~2/week to ~6/week. Phone calls increased from ~1/week to ~3/week.

The Numbers

Over three months:

  • Search clicks: +35%
  • Form enquiries: +200%
  • Phone calls: +200%
  • Website bounce rate: -26% (more visitors staying longer)
  • Average pages per session: +1.2 pages

Not all three changes would have worked alone. Ranking high in search (change 1) doesn't matter if the site is slow and the contact path is hidden (changes 2 and 3). Improving speed doesn't matter if no one's finding you (change 1).

Why These Three Work Together

  • Local SEO brings qualified visitors who already know they need your service.
  • Speed keeps them from bouncing. A fast site feels trustworthy.
  • Clear conversion path removes friction between "interested" and "call now."

Fix one, the others still fail. Fix all three, they compound.

How to Apply This to Your Business

Check Your Ranking

Search "[your service] [your location]" on Google. Are you in the top 5? If not, local SEO is your first step.

Check Your Speed

Go to PageSpeed Insights, enter your main page URL, and check your score. If it's under 70, speed is holding you back.

Check Your Conversion Path

Ask yourself: Can a visitor find your phone number in under 3 seconds? Is the contact form above the fold? Is it short enough that someone on a phone will fill it out?

If the answer to any is no, that's money on the table.
